On 22 January, Grade XI students participated in an engaging forensic science workshop titled ‘Find the Fake!’, conducted by Professor Stephen Ashworth, Professor of Chemical Physics and Science Communication at the University of East Anglia (UEA), United Kingdom.
The workshop introduced students to the role of forensic chemists through hands-on experimentation and real-world applications. Students investigated unidentified white powders using techniques such as puddle chemistry and simplified titration, learning how scientific evidence is analysed in forensic investigations. The session emphasised experiential and collaborative learning. Working in teams, students made observations, recorded findings, analysed results, and drew logical conclusions. This inquiry-based approach enhanced their critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and scientific reasoning. Students responded with enthusiasm, appreciating the practical and engaging method of learning. The workshop successfully reinforced classroom concepts while highlighting the relevance of chemistry in everyday life and real-world problem-solving.
