BALA (Building As a Learning Aid)

“In our school, every wall, floor, and stair tells a story — through BALA, we’ve turned our campus into a living textbook where learning happens with every step, glance, and corner explored.”

Our learning spaces keep evolving. Over the years, the pavements circling the school atrium have transformed into colourful showcases of knowledge — from the Periodic Table of Elements and geometric shapes to the UN’s structure, phases of the Moon, latitudes and longitudes, a fraction chart, and even a sweeping timeline of Delhi, India, and world history.

In the kindergarten block, railings adorned with bright beads serve as a playful abacus, teaching the tiniest learners colours, numbers, patterns, and sequences. And as you climb the school’s stairs, history quite literally rises with you — each step marked with important dates from the past.

Here, learning doesn’t just happen in classrooms — it occurs with every step you take, every glance you cast, and every corner you explore.

It serves as the nerve center for our physical education program, ensuring students have easy access to resources for both indoor and outdoor games. The room reflects our commitment to promoting an active, healthy, and balanced lifestyle.

SUSTAINABILITY

The school has made meaningful strides to shrink its carbon footprint and promote a cleaner, healthier environment — leading by example to show students that “every small step can grow into a better world.”

GREEN TEEN — our Eco Club, founded in 2011 — brings together students from Classes VI to XII who are united by a shared mission: to protect and preserve the planet. With passion and purpose, members pledge to build on the school’s green initiatives and champion the cause of conservation in every way possible.

Some of the impactful projects they’ve undertaken include:

No Plastic Zone

“Refuse the Single-Use — Our School Chooses Reuse.”

Single-use plastics — items like bags, straws, stirrers, and disposable bottles — are designed for one-time use before being discarded or recycled. To protect our planet, TIS has taken a firm stand: our cafeteria no longer uses plastic plates, glasses, or cutlery, and all single-use plastic items have been eliminated.

Students are encouraged to bring their own lunch boxes when buying food from the cafeteria, reducing waste even further. As a No Polybag Zone, our school ensures that neither students nor teachers bring polythene bags onto campus — making sustainability a shared responsibility.

Paper Recycling

Our school proudly stands as a ‘No Polybag’ zone, where the only bags you’ll find are ones with a story. At the heart of this effort is our paper recycling plant, working at full capacity to transform waste paper from classrooms, offices, and school spaces into something beautiful and useful.

From folders, envelopes, and cards to paper bags and bookmarks, these creations become eco-friendly gifts and invitations for school events. But the impact doesn’t stop at our gates — our students actively encourage shopkeepers in the C-Block Market, Vasant Vihar to adopt and use these handmade products.

On parent-teacher interaction days, colourful stalls brim with these student-made items. Every purchase not only supports sustainability but also contributes directly to the school’s social initiative donation funds — proving that waste isn’t the end of the story, it’s the start of a new one.

Solar Panels

The school’s rooftops now catch sunlight and turn it into power, thanks to our installed solar panels. This clean energy not only makes us fully self-sufficient, but also allows us to give back — surplus electricity flows to BSES, boosting our credit rating with them.

And it’s not just the panels doing the work — our students have taken the pledge to “switch off to save on”, diligently turning off electrical appliances when not in use, proving that sustainability starts with small, conscious choices.

Rainwater Harvesting Pits

Launched by the school’s Eco Club in 2000 as a modest experiment, our rainwater harvesting project has grown into a powerful sustainability initiative. Today, 14 harvesting pits across the campus actively collect and channel rainwater, playing a key role in recharging the region’s water table and conserving this vital resource.

Water Banks

In our ongoing mission to conserve water, the school has set up water collection tubs in the inner atrium. At dispersal, students pour the unused water from their bottles into these tubs, creating a shared ‘water bank’. This collected water is then used to nourish the plants across our campus — turning every drop into growth.

E-Waste Warriors

Since 2012, the Green Teens have been on a mission to keep toxic tech out of landfills. Partnering first with Nokia and later with Namo E-Waste Management, they collect discarded mobiles, chargers, keyboards, headphones, and more — ensuring these hazardous items are disposed of responsibly.

Our efforts earned us Platinum Status in the Nokia Planet ke Rakhwale campaign, and the work hasn’t stopped. Through our E-Waste Awareness Plan, we urge everyone to use electronics wisely, hand over unwanted devices to the school’s e-trash bins, and never dump them with regular waste  because even the smallest gadget can leave a big toxic footprint.

Sorting It Right

To tackle the challenge of waste segregation, Class VIII students led a hands-on awareness drive for Classes IV and V — guiding them to dispose of waste in the correct bins while explaining the difference between blue and green dustbins and what counts as biodegradable vs. non-biodegradable waste.

Adding a creative spark, Eco Club students of Class XI transformed the school’s dustbins into vibrant storytellers — painting them with doodles and messages that remind everyone: waste is only waste if it’s in the wrong place.

Green Horizons

At our school, environmental awareness isn’t a lesson — it’s a way of life. Students are encouraged not just to understand ecological issues but to actively become part of the solution. Through workshops on environment protection, resource management, and eco-friendly celebrations for festivals like Diwali and Holi, students learn that every choice matters. From poster campaigns for a cracker-free Diwali to crafting packaging from recycled newspapers, from selling smokeless diyas to making herbal colours for Holi, each activity is a step towards mindful living.

Adding to this vision is our Kitchen Garden, a living classroom where students grow vegetables, herbs, and seasonal plants with their own hands. It helps them understand sustainable farming practices, the importance of organic food, and the joy of nurturing nature. The garden not only provides fresh produce but also cultivates responsibility, patience, and respect for the environment.

Even in daily routines, such as the careful use of water and electricity, our students prove that small, consistent actions can create big, lasting change.

SCHOOL TRANSPORT SYSTEM

Our school operates a fleet of 19 well-maintained buses, each driven by experienced drivers and assisted by trained conductors, ensuring safe and comfortable travel for every student. All buses comply with the safety standards set by the Transport Department of Delhi and undergo regular maintenance.

To ensure proper supervision, every bus has a female support staff member who remains on board until the last student is dropped off. On most routes, a teacher is also present for the entire journey; where a teacher is unavailable, two female support staff members are deployed.

We have now begun introducing air-conditioned buses to make commutes more comfortable, especially during Delhi’s extreme weather conditions. Students are expected to follow all bus rules to maintain a safe and pleasant travel environment.

CCTV Surveillance

“For the safety and well-being of our students and staff, the school is monitored by CCTV cameras strategically placed at key points across the campus.”

“Firefighting equipment is installed in every corridor and laboratory, with regular disaster management drills ensuring that students and teachers are prepared to respond swiftly and safely in any emergency.”

Fire Fighting Equipment

Fire fighting equipment is installed in all the corridors and laboratories of the school. Regular disaster management drills are conducted in the school to prepare students and teachers to handle any emergency.
