As a school we take pride in being inclusive, multi-cultural and secular. The school is a safe and harmonious environment for every student. A talk on the kind of discrimination faced in Delhi by citizens from the North East was an eye opener for many students who had never thought about this earlier. The aim was to address prejudices and stereotypes, encourage empathy and respect, and celebrate the rich cultural diversity of India. On April 12, 2024, a session was held for Classes IX and X students. It commenced with students anonymously documenting their encounters with discrimination. A segment from “Chak De India” was screened, underscoring the importance of acknowledging equality. Traditional clothing from diverse Indian states was exhibited, highlighting the common humanity of those who wear them. Students were dismayed to discover that 77% of North East residents face racial discrimination, often being derogatorily referred to as “chinkies” or “momos,” and questioned about their nationality. The anonymous notes were then revealed, emphasizing that discrimination of any kind is unjust. Many shared their experiences of facing prejudice, concluding the session as a significant stride toward fostering an inclusive and respectful school environment. Through education, empathy, and cultural appreciation, we can collectively build a society that embraces diversity and condemns discrimination.
